J.H. Steward Cavalry Sketch Board |
|
| The size of this mahogany Cavalry Sketching Board far exceeds that which the vast majority of others were made at. The drawing area of the board measures 14 by 10 inches, which is close to twice the size of a standard board. However, it is made with less measuring tools than most. There are no scaled rulers or inclinometer to the back, only a compass to the top, which is engraved with the maker’s name of ‘J. H. Steward, London’. Steward’s premises were 406 Strand, London. It has split mahogany rollers to each side to feed the paper, with brass tightening nuts to the top. The back has a swivel leather wrist belt. Early 20th century. | |
