Antique Sailor's Serving Mallet |

This tool was made by a Sailor out of lignum vitae, a common wood used by sailors for tools, to assist him in his role as sailmaker. The concave part to the underside would be used to draw the yarn, twine or sisal hemp tight. It would also fit over the rope that was intended to be sewn to the canvas. The end of the tool could also be used in a similar way to a rubber in smoothing the seam of a sail. Early to mid 19th Century. |
