Campaign Writing Slope |
|
Made of mahogany with brass edging and skeletal handles to the sides, this writing slope would have been by a good cabinet maker. The writing surface is lined in original blue grained leather. Underneath the bottom half of the slope there is a plain well for papers with criss crossed red ribbon to the underside of the lid to hold notes. Under the lockable top half there is a lift out tray, which probably had a lid originally, and a well below. There is no side drawer but 3 secret drawers hidden underneath the desk tidy area and hidden by a facia board. The spring to the board is released by depressing a button accessed by a pin through the box’s main lock. The large escutcheon plate to this lock is decorative, oversized and is mirrored by the blank name plate to the top. The antique period is early 19th Century. |
