Antique Corkscrew belonging to Major Everard

This nickel plated Roundlet corkscrew is a standard design but very practical for travel. When the handle is unscrewed at its centre, the corkscrew’s worm falls on its pivot and will then push into the handle. Fixing the other half of the handle back on encloses the worm to leave an easy to carry cylinder. The corkscrew stands out for the engraved name to the handle of Major Everard, Royal Dragoons. Everard is not a common name in the Army Lists and the only one we have found in the Royal Dragoons is Benjamin Everard. He joined the Dragoons as an Ensign in 1813, becoming a Lieutenant in 1818 and purchased his Captaincy in 1825. His Majority was purchased in 1830 and he is noted as having served in the Mahratta War in 1817. His retirement date is not known but he is not in the 1854 list. The Cork Examiner noted his death in December 1863, with the rank of Major. Mid 19th Century.
