Antique Campaign Box Mirror

Antique Campaign Box Mirror

Mahogany Campaign box mirrors are not uncommon items but this one stands out for having a pair of removable brass candle arms. The arms are decorated with a twist to the upright and leaves to the underside of the sconce. They are hinged to allow them to be straightened for storage in a compartment to the foot of the box and for use simply fit by inserting the ends into holes strengthened with brass plates to the box. Unlike the majority of box mirrors, the framed looking glass cannot be removed from its box to be hung independently. The bottom of the mirror has two brass pins that run along grooves to the inside of the box until it reaches its position for use. The back half of the protective box cover can then be lifted and set into one of five positions, to the back of the mirror, to dictate the angle of the glass. The candle arms are both marked with kitemarks, used to date registered designs. Although this format of the kitemark was used between 1842 and 1867, frustratingly the marks are worn. The year might be 1861 but it is impossible to be sure.
