Antique Leather Box by T. Maltwood |
|
The interior of this small leather on pine box or casket has a label for Thomas Maltwood. Thomas was located at 29 Oxford Street and is not to be confused with R. and W. Maltwood who were at 168 Strand, although they were probably related. Thomas advertised on his label that he sold Military Portmanteaus, Saddle bags, Carpet Bags, Valises etc. He sold retail and for exportation. The leather is decorated with cross hatched tooled lines and has a brass swan neck handle to the top and shaped escutcheon plate to the lock. The interior is lined with newspaper over printed with a spot pattern that is typical of the period. The box interior has a lip to make the top a good fix and is hinged by the leather. The box sits on low sledge feet running from side to side. Thomas Maltwood had set up in by business by 1818 and is still recorded at the same address in 1852. By 1865 he is no longer listed in the London directories. Circa 1830. We are very happy to email or fax full condition reports upon request. |
