Antique Portable Sedan Chair |
|
The iron arms that swing out to extend on this satin birch chair turn it into a Sedan to allow the sitter to be carried. Typically this form of chair has shorter legs but the height of this one makes it more practical for everyday use, especially with the addition of the buttoned leather seats over the cane work. The hinged arms fix to the back by twist catches allowing the chair, with the beech legs removed, to fold down into a compact size. Although unnamed, a number of people made these chairs including Alderman, John Carter and Ward. Late 19th century.
