Maker - Richard Millard |
The earliest known date for Richard Millard is 1845, when he was granted a patent for his Portable Recumbent and Easy Chair. His address on the patent is noted as 12 Craven Street, Strand. He is perhaps best known for his part in the company of Hill and Millard which were established by 1854, when he joined forces with John Hill. The firm enjoyed a good reputation and seem to have traded together until 1880. What exactly happened to their partnership at this time is not known but only Richard Millard is listed at their 7, Duncannon Street address at that date. As the company of Hill, Millard Ltd is noted at 7 Duncannon Street from 1890 to 1930 it might be assumed that the partnership had always remained in place. However, this advert from the Army List Advertiser of May 1884 suggest otherwise as Millard describes himself as 'Late Hill & Millard'. Perhaps they had a falling out which was later resolved or Hill died with a relative later joining Millard. It is also interesting to compare this advert with Hill & Millard's one of 1867, illustrated in British Campaign Furniture. Although this advert was placed 17 years later most of the information and illustrations are the same, suggesting that their inventory hardly changed. May 1884.
