These two beech chairs, the standing work to the X-frame principle. To set up these chairs, they simply need to be pulled apart to extend into the open position. The painted steel stretchers make an X when opened with a rivet to the middle of the two bars. The seat can then be hung into position with twist locks to secure it. The back holds its position by resting on the back of the seat and extending the two metal bars to the back to lock as one. When packed, the seat wraps around the folded chair fixing with a belt strap and has a carry handle. This folding design was applied to a number of items of camp furniture from beds and easy chairs (the Paragon) to washstands and baths. Harrods described it as ‘Special Camp Kit, as approved and recommended by the War Office. The original design of this chair is late 19th century. The standing chair is a little earlier than the folded chair and has leather straps as opposed to canvas. It is also stamped ‘The X Chair, Patents Co. Ltd. A Crown M. The folded chair is circa 1930 and the standing circa 1910.
