The Padouk framework of this folding bookstand gives it a pleasing quality. The padouk bars of the frame are fixed with open mortice and tenon joints and the hinged foot is adjusted by a string held by pegs. Given the quality of the framework it is unusual that the mechanism for adjusting the angle of the foot isn’t better considered. The date AD 1869 is scratch carved to the back and perhaps this with the string adjuster indicates that it was made by a gifted amateur. Dated 1869. |
