Nicknamed Long Johns because of the length of their barrels, these pair of binoculars are mostly made of brass. They extend to half their length again, when focusing and work well. Although this type of binocular is associated with naval use, the leather case with its shoulder strap and belt loops show that they would be useful on land. By also fixing the case to your belt you prevent it from swinging inadvertently and so warning any prey or enemy. The case is well made with a fishtail handle to the top and lined in burgundy velvet. There is no indication of a maker to either the binoculars or the leather case. Late 19th Century.
