A mahogany Naval Campaign Armchair.
The chair is hinged to the middle of the side rails to concertina flat pack in one easy movement, once the arms are released and the caned seat is lifted. The folding arms have brass push button catches that release a barbed tooth that fixes the two sections at their right angle joint.
Armchair versions of this form of campaign chair are harder to find than those without. This is a classic piece of Georgian campaign furniture that packs quickly to a small size and so was perfectly designed for life on board a warship when preparation for action had to be swift. Late 18th century.
