Trafalgar Snuff Box

Trafalgar Snuff Box

£345

A papier mache Snuff Box celebrating Nelson's victory at Trafalgar.

The top of the box is decorated with a transfer print showing the British ships in action. The interior of the lid has a round, gold transfer that notes 'Victory Battle of Trafalgar'. The main body of the box is painted black. A round snuff box with the same transfer is known and it was possibly by the same maker. Such items would have been popular in the first half of the 19th century. They showed the owner's patriotism in recognising England's hero and the significance of the sea battle to the Napoleonic Wars.

As might be expected from the materials used, the box has wear to the paint and transfers and the front right corner of the lid is missing. Early 19th Century.
