A silver and leather Luggage Label by J. H. Johnston & Co.
The label is in the form of a silver hand holding a bag which is cast with the title 'My Grip'. The label is suspended on a leather belt strap to fix it to your luggage. The quality of the work to the leather is very good with fine stitching to the buckle and tramlines to the strap. The back of the label, that would be used for engraving the owner's details is blank.
The back is stamped J. H. Johnston & Co., Sterling, Pat. Apd For. The company was started in New York in 1860 but went under the name on this label from approximately 1889 to 1897 when they went bankrupt. After they were known as J. H. Johnston & Son and continued until 1914.
This luxury form of luggage label seemed to be quite popular in America at the end of the 19th century, with a few different high end makers producing their own versions. Its probable that the label was never used as the condition is very good. Circa 1895.
