Loving Cup - The Two Allies, Tied And Allied
84042
A two handled Staffordshire pottery Loving Cup.
The Cup is decorated with black transfer prints of 'The Two Allies' showing a British and a Portuguese General. When the Cup is turned upside down, the alternative title 'Tied And Allied' can be read and the two generals are a pair of donkeys, a common attribute given to military leaders who were often thought of as stubborn. The Anglo-Portuguese Alliance was formed in 1386 and still remains in place today.
The opposite side of the mug has a transfer of a hunting dog with a rabbit but no title. The bottom of the step moulded base is decorated to its edge, as is the interior rim and the handles. There are no maker's marks but it is known that this mug was also made in a blue transfer, with the generals printed twice (upside down and not) and with frogs to the interior.
The condition is good although there is chip to the base edge which is only visible when turned upside down and there some glazing cracks. These can all be seen in the photos.
It is not known if the mug was produced in reaction to a specific event, such as the 500th anniversary of the Alliance or not but it is testament to an enduring relationship between the two countries. Late 19th Century.
