This detailed plan shows the Fort of Vellore in the Madras Presidency and is dated 6th April 1817.

Fort Vellore was built in the late 16th century by the Vijaynagar Kings and passed through several hands until the British occupied it in 1760. It was a large, impressive stronghold with a crocodile filled moat. Tipu Sultan's children were kept at the fort after the fall of Seringapatam, where they lived a live of luxury. Perhaps the most famous event in the fort's history took place in 1806 when a dawn mutiny took place, with the suggestion that it was to return Tipu's family to the throne. There were many British casualties and the fort was taken for six hours before the 19th Dragoons arrived.

This watercolour plan was made eleven years after the mutiny and to all intents and purposes the fort is the same, excepting the change of use of some of the buildings. Aside, the obvious use of the buildings such as barracks, hospital etc. it is interesting to note that the fort had a Fives Court for the recreation of the British. It is known that the 34th Cumberland Regiment of Foot were stationed at Vellore in 1817 and it is possible that this detailed plan was made by one of their officers. Dated 1817.
