Long Naval Trunk

Long Naval Trunk

£680

An unusually long oak Trunk with rope carrying handles.

The trunk is constructed with open dovetails and has applied mouldings to the top and base, fixed with nails. The over hanging mouldings to the top make a seal to the base. There is a 'Patent' stamped lock with a crown but no key. The sides have becket handles with good rope work. There is evidence of a leather sleeve to the rope bolt that fits through the wood block. This would add strength to the stress point of the handles. The wooden blocks have some light carved decoration which is typical of sailor's trunks.

It's likely that this trunk was made by a ship's carpenter. Its long, low size suggests that it was made to store something specific such as guns or swords. It's an unusual size which might make it useful today for storing shoes etc. in a hallway. Early 19th Century.
