Lipped Rum Measure

Lipped Rum Measure

£165

A Royal Navy quart sized, copper Lipped Rum Measure.

The pot bellied jug has a riveted handle and a stepped base. It is seamed in line with the handle and tined to the interior. It's stamped with a Broad Arrow and its size to the front of the jug, below the spout. The marks are worn but legible.

Lipped measures were used for measuring the correct quantity of neat rum to water as their narrow neck meant they were far more accurate than Round measures, which were used for distributing the mixed up Grog to the sailor's messes.

This measure has been well used and there are a number of bumps and dents to its body which should be obvious in the photos.

The use of the Broad Arrow on Lipped Measures was stopped just before the start of the First World War. Circa 1910.
