A brass edged, Asian hardwood Dressing Box.

The timber to this box is likely to be a good quality teak but may be padouk. The base board, which would commonly would be a lesser quality timber, is teak but the grain and colour to the rest of the box is much tighter and a richer colour than most teaks. The deep colour is nicely offset by the brass edging to all corner sides of the box. In places it has also developed its own darker patina.

The box has brass skeletal campaign handles to the sides and originally would have had a brass engraving plate. Its probable that this was removed at some stage and a wooden insert replaced it. With time the wooden insert has faded to a much lighter colour. The lock is not marked and has no key. The lid has stay hinges to hold it vertically when open.

As with so many Dressing Boxes, it has been stripped out of any trays and dividers etc. to give it a continued use. The wood is a good colour and the size practical for storage. Early to mid 19th Century.
