Gen. Sir Gatacre Transfer Jug
Gen. Sir Gatacre Transfer Jug
81782
This jug is moulded to the same shape as the Maj. Gen. French jug also shown on this website, and is decorated with a transfer of General Sir William Gatacre. His title and name is noted to the back of the jug which is also embellished with gilt highlights to the rim and brown glaze. The jug is stamped England to the base. Gatacre already had a good reputation before he took command of the Third Division in South Africa having fought in India and North Africa. Although he is perhaps unfairly remembered for his defeat at Stormberg in the Boer War, he was a commander who led from the front and was much loved by his soldiers. He retired in 1904. Circa 1900.
There is a long history of commemorative ceramics depicting various subjects from royalty and heroes to political causes. At the end of the 19th Century, when the country needed their moral boosting following events in South Africa, a number of military heroes were commemorated on various ceramics.
