A Made of silver plate Travel Cup by Hukin & Heath.

This beaker has a hinged lid which reveals six graduating rings when opened. The telescopic cup action of the graduated rings means that when they are lifted up they form a water tight seal. This was a common design for travelling cups of the late 19th and early 20th century.

This is a relatively large beaker yet the cased size is very compact. Although the hinged lid makes it a little more awkward to use as cup, you do not have the danger of losing it.

The bottom of the cup is marked 'H & H' for the maker Hukin & Heath with the number '22040'. JW Hukin and JT Heath were silversmiths and electroplaters in Birmingham from 1855 to 1953. They had a strong association with the designer Christopher Dresser, manufacturing many of his designs and are recognized for the quality of their work.

Telescopic Cups of this form were used by sporting gentleman, cyclists, travellers and of course soldiers. Late 19th century.
