Large Rum Funnel

Large Rum Funnel

£135

A copper Royal Navy Rum Funnel.

Four different sizes of rum funnels were used by the Navy to fill Barricoe barrels with rum. The Barricoes were then carried to where their contents would be mixed with water to make grog. This half gallon size is the second largest with the quart and pint smaller and the gallon funnel larger.

The funnel is made out of three parts: the bowl, the inverted pyramid and the seamed tube. All are copper and tinned to their interior to prevent the copper spoiling the taste of the rum. The inverted pyramid below the bowl had a practical function in that it allowed the funnel to sit without tipping. The bowl has a triangular hanging ring to store it when not in use.

The funnel has no markings to it, with vocabulary number only introduced in the early 1950s. The funnel has the odd dent here and there through use but is in general good order. Early 20th Century.

Please note that if you are interested in Royal Navy rum equipment, we have another similar funnel, several round measures and a lipped measure also in stock.
