Picnic Flagon Decanter
Picnic Flagon Decanter
A glass and silver Decanter covered in wicker by Hukin & Heath.
The Decanter is made in the style of a flagon with a finger handle set on its chamfered shoulders. The main body of the bottle is covered neatly in fine wicker work and the neck has a silver collar for pouring. The stopper is made of cork with a ball finial and a rod through the centre fixing to a round plate to the bottom of the cork.
This decanter may have been intended for use on a picnic or for travel. The wicker gives protection to the glass and, with its flagon shape, is reminiscent of workers in the fields having their lunch. The idea of taking an everyday object used by workers but refining and elevating it by changing the material from pottery to glass, silver and wicker fitted in with Hukin and Heath's design values.
Both the collar and stopper are hallmarked for Birmingham and with Hukin and Heath's post 1886 stamp, reflecting John Hartshorne Middleton becoming a partner. The Birmingham hallmark is stamped with the date letter t for 1893.
