William Hay's Indenture for HMS Alarm

Reference

81932

A partially printed and hand written Indenture from the Commissioners of the Lord High Admiral appointing Captain William Hay as Captain of HMS Alarm on the 31st of May 1776.

The Indenture is signed to the bottom By Command of Their Lordships Viscount Lisburne, the Earl of Penton and Sir H. Palliser. The first signature is difficult to read but maybe the Earl of Sandwich, First Lord of the Admiralty. The 32 gun Alarm was famous for being the first Royal Navy ship to be fully copper sheaved to the hull. Hay had already captained HMS Carysfort and Tamer before he took over the Alarm and had experience in the West Indies and Gulf of Mexico. He was on HMS Alarm for a year and the ship spent most of that time in the Mediterranean.

This indenture is a lucky survivor for its age. It is mounted on card. Dated 1776.
