The red, grained leather dispatch box has a chamfered top and is decorated in gilt. The Royal Court of Arms to the top suggests that it was used either on the Queen's or Government service. The maker's name John Peck & Son, with the address of Nelson Square, Blackfriars, London is stamped in gilt to one side of the lock. To the other side is stamped Manufacturers to HM Stat. Office.

There is little known on John Peck but the company was in existence at least by 1880 with the London trade directories listing him as a Pocket Book Maker at 19 Nelson Square. The company stayed in the square but had moved to No. 7 by 1912 and were listed as Leather Goods Manufacturers. Early 20th Century.
