Mahogany Campaign Box
Mahogany Campaign Box
82830
A Georgian mahogany, brass bound Box.
The good brass strap work and flush campaign handle to this box offset the deep colour of its mahogany. The heavy use of brass strap work adds significant strength to the box suggesting it may have held something of weight such as a scientific instrument etc. The base is relined in red velvet to match the lid and so there are no clues to the box's original contents. Aside from shaped corners to the top and two corner straps to the bottom (when you would expect only one), the box also has two straps running the full depth of the top and brass corners to the inside edges of both the top and base where they meet. Added to this the large escutcheon plate and the handle to the top are both a good shape. The lock is stamped GR for the reign of George. It has a working key but it can be temperamental.
This is a good looking box and would be useful for keeping papers or valuables in. Early Century.
