A pigskin leather Despatch Box with the name R.A. Forbes engraved to the brass handle plate.
The box has a Bramah lock with one original and one later key. The interior is lined in a dark green, grained leather and the top is held open on good quality quadrant hinges. The interior of the top has crossed bands of leather to hold papers etc.
There is no maker's name to the box but it is good quality, as indicated by the Bramah lock and quadrant hinges. The name to the top does not give enough information to be able to trace the history of the owner. The name William H. Forbes is also to the ribbon holding the keys but this still gives insufficient information to determine the original purchaser.
It is unusual to find a Despatch Box in pigskin leather, let alone one that has been left in a tan colour. The box is a standard size and still in good working order. Circa 1900.
