A small silver and crocodile leather small Hip or Shooting Flask by James Dixon & Sons of Sheffield.

The flask has a bayonet fitting to the cap and removable cup with a gilt wash to the interior. The underside of the cup is stamped 3/16 P to give its volume as a fraction of a pint. The cup is also stamped A3 which may be a reference to it design. The flask is hallmarked along with the maker's initials in a cartouche to both the cup and cap. The hallmarks are for Sheffield with the date letter M for 1929 to the cap and N for 1930 to the cup.

Dixon's were probably the most prolific makers of such flasks in England and it would not have been unusual for such a large company to send a high number of components to be hallmarked before they were needed. As such, when assembled it wouldn't be uncommon for an item with two silver parts to have slightly different hallmark dates. The flask is engraved with the original owner's initials of A.H.P.L.

This is a good flask, elevated by the use of both crocodile and silver, and still very useable. Dated 1930.
