Watercolour Portrait of a Young Naval Cadet
A watercolour portrait of a Young Naval Cadet with the name and date R.M.C. Webster, June 1847 written to the back.
The button and twisted cord to the collar shows the subject is a Cadet rather than a Midshipman and this is reinforced by the size of the sword to the boy. The Cadet is stood on the quay with the sea, a cliff and ships to the background. We have not been able to trace the name R.M.C. Webster.
The artist has captured the face well and this is a good little portrait. It has suffered a little over time with evidence of water marks etc. but, given the looseness of the painting to the background, they are not offensive to the eye. The picture is later mounted and framed and on removal it can be seen that approximately half an inch all round of the painting is covered by the mount. The difference in colour shows that the picture has had a mount that it is too small for a long time.
A good watercolour of a Naval Cadet. Dated June 1847.
