Antique Campaign Teak Cupboard
6158
A double Campaign Cupboard of this date is rare and it is probable that the idea of using one to house a chest during travel was not considered until closer to the mid 19th century.
It is certainly evident from the difference in size of the two parts of this cupboard and the timber used that it was never intended to house a chest but was a piece of furniture in its own right. As such it is an interesting variant on the classical military chest and with its adjustable shelf to each section it would have provided as much storage as a set of drawers. The cupboards have gilt brass handles and the top sits on the base, with no lugs or bolts to prevent its movement.
The removal of the feet, for travel, is also interesting. They do not unscrew, as is the norm but the turned legs are fitted to blocks which have a long dovetail that slides into a corresponding groove on the underside of the base.
