A lignum vitae wood Sailor's Fid for opening the strands of a rope for splicing.

The majority of fids were made of lignum or iron wood, as its also known, but you also find them in other woods and marine ivory. The wood to this example is particular pleasing to the eye for the two colour mix with the sap wood. It is also well turned giving it a fineness to the shape with 3 ring turnings to the top.
