Brass Bound Box by Wells & Lambe
This mahogany box bears all the hallmarks of Wells and Lambe's work.
It is fully brass edged, has stop hinges and the grain and colour of the timber is excellent. The interior is lined in Morocco Red leather with a compartment to the lid. The plate to the top is engraved 'J C'. The label also states that they were makers to The Duke of Cumberland and it is interesting to note that on the 11th August 1837 John Lambe was appointed dressing case maker to the Lord Chamberlain's Offices on the recommendation of the Duchess of Northumberland.
The last recorded address for Wells and Lambe is 29 Cockspur Street in 1825, so presumably by this date the partnership had ceased due to either the death of Wells or disagreement. Circa 1817 - 1825.
