An oak Box probably designed to house a canteen of silver.

Most silver trunks are much larger than this but all that an officer needed to dine in style would be able to fit into this one. The box is quite plain and unassuming but has a flush brass campaign handle to each side and is made with open dovetails. The lid has a line mould cut into the edge. Originally it would have been lined in baize, which has since been removed except to the base, and had lift out, divided trays to separate the silver. It's a useful size and height. Late 19th Century.
