Slouch Hat Travel Inkwell

Sold

A canvas on pressed brass Slouch Hat Travel Inkwell.

The hat has a push button to the front which releases the hinged top. The glass inkwell to the interior is sealed by another cap, with a sprung pad to its interior, and is released by a sprung catch.

The side of the hat is marked CIV for The City Of London Imperial Volunteers, and the hat is the correct shape for the regiment. They were raised in December 1899 to fight in the second Anglo Boer War and equipped by the City of London. They travelled to South Africa in January and February and took part in the relief of Kimberley. The force returned to England in October 1900 and were disbanded in December.

This hat was probably aimed either at the soldiers who fought in South Africa or their families as a reminder of their service. Circa 1900.
