A pair of olive wood Travelling Candlesticks or Brighton Buns.

Most olive wood portable candlesticks were made in the Holy Land as souvenirs for travellers and pilgrims. They had both a practical use and were a reminder of the visit.

This pair are a standard design with an elongated sconce or candle holder with a strongly turned shape. They also have a good turned moulding to the edge of the dishes and the wood has been well chosen for its strong figuring that contrasts against the light honey colouring of the wood. They stand out from many such candlesticks for the quality of both their make and timber selection.

A number of these candlestick are inscribed 'Jerusalem'. This pair are also marked Jerusalem but in old Hebrew which allows us to date them to around 1890. After this approximate date a 'yud' was added between the last and second to last letters. Circa 1890.
