A leather cased Patent Door Wedge by T.R. Hill.

The Door Wedge was a very useful gadget for the traveller, offering security at any inn they might stay at. To use it, the brass wedges is slide under the door and pressed down so that the two teeth to the underside bite the room' floorboards. The beech wedge is then slid in between the two hinged sections of the brass forcing them apart. This would prevent the door from being opened by a thief whilst you slept.

The Wedge is stamped in gilt to the top of the case with 'Hill's Registered Door Wedge'. The brass is is also stamped 'T.R. Hill Registered' and the beech wedge with just 'Registered'.

The case has some wear to it and the top of the top section has been replaced. Other examples we have had have also been marked with the registration date of 17th December 1847. Mid 19th Century.
