The construction of this leather bag is for strength.
It's made of good hide with the handles wrapping around the main body to give extra support. The interior is also lined in a soft leather. This type of bag was made with safety in mind and would have been used to carry either money or valuables. It has a brass sliding lock which still works although there is no key. The shape is often described as a Gladstone although the bag used by the Prime Minister was of a different size and shape. Circa 1900.
