J & W Lowndes are relatively well known campaign furniture makers but little of their work appears on the market.

This mahogany chest is made to high standard throughout. The choice of mahogany is good with a deep colour and movement to the grain; the brass handles are good quality with the bales a little heavier than standard; the incised moulding line cut into the edge of the drawers is subtle in lifting the chest. The top of the chest has flush brass fittings and marks that show the chest originally had a removable shelving superstructure. Aside from the locating lugs to join the two halves, they were also fixed with short bolts between the two sections. There are no protective brass straps or corners and this is probably an indication of its earlier date. All of the drawers, except one, are stencilled to the interior bottom and the back with 'J & W Lowndes, 18 Haymarket'. Early to mid 19th century.
