Silver Apperley's Patent Combination Bookmarker

Made by Sampson Mordan & Co., this silver Combination Book-marker, Leaf Holder and Paper Knife is made to Apperley's Patent. Ebenezor Apperley was a dentist in Stroud, Gloucestershire and he applied for a patent for his Book-marker on the 2nd of March 1895. His patent was awarded nearly a year later on the 15th of February 1896. This tool works well.

The book-mark is not unlike a number of others in that it is sprung to fit tightly over a single page. When it is positioned close to the spine, the addition of a riveted crossbar can be set at a right angle to hold the book open to read. The end of the book-mark is also shaped to allow it to be used as a paper knife. It is possible that it also originally had a ring to the top. Although Apperley preferred to make the marker out of vulcanized rubber, he suggested any material could be used.

Sampson Mordan & Co. were well established manufacturers and retailers and no doubt realised the marker would be more commercial if it was made of silver and aimed at a higher market. It is hallmarked for London in 2 places, with one also giving the date letter of b for 1897. It is also marked with Sampson Mordan & Co.'s initials and stamped Apperley's Patent. Dated 1897.
